Parepare, December 29, 2025 – The Postgraduate Program of the State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Parepare, through the Master of Islamic Family Law (HKI) Study Program, successfully held an international collaboration activity with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in the form of Community Service (PKM). The activity entitled "IAIN Parepare-UKM International Collaboration on Community Service" with the theme "Increasing Ecological Awareness for Islamic Boarding School-Based Communities" was held on December 23, 2025 at the Islamic Senior High School (MA) DDI Lil Banat, Parepare City.

The event featured the main speaker, Prof. Dr. Mohd Nasran bin Mohamad from the Center for Sharia Studies, Faculty of Islamic Studies, UKM Malaysia. The material presented focused on environmental fiqh as an Islamic approach in facing the global ecological crisis. This activity was coordinated by the Head of the Postgraduate Intellectual Property Rights Study Program at IAIN Parepare, Prof. Rusdaya Basri, Lc., M.Ag., and supported by the lecturer of the Intellectual Property Rights Study Program, Prof. Dr. Rahmawati, M.Ag.

Participants included postgraduate students from IAIN Parepare, students from the Islamic Family Law (HKI) program, and students from local Islamic junior high schools (MTs) and Islamic senior high schools (MA). Their presence demonstrated a strong enthusiasm for environmental issues from a sharia perspective. As host, Ms. Nur Laela, S.Pd.I., welcomed the event with open arms and provided full access to school facilities to ensure the event ran smoothly.

The primary objective of this PKM is to apply university knowledge to solve real-world problems in society, specifically by increasing ecological awareness within Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) through an environmental fiqh approach. This activity also aims to empower communities through innovative solutions, improve well-being, foster student entrepreneurship, and strengthen campus-community relationships for sustainable and equitable development. For students, this field experience helps develop empathy, creativity, and skills in directly addressing complex issues.

The benefits of the collaboration between IAIN Parepare and UKM are significant for both institutions. For IAIN Parepare, this activity enriches the Intellectual Property Rights Study Program curriculum with an international perspective, enhances its reputation as an institution active in community service, and opens up opportunities for further collaboration in the field of environmental fiqh research. For UKM, this collaboration expands the reach of service and the dissemination of sharia expertise to Islamic boarding school communities in Indonesia, while strengthening regional academic networks in Southeast Asia.

This activity is expected to be the first step for similar programs in the future, to support the development of a more environmentally conscious society based on Islamic values.
